When are classes?
Classes are offered from mid June through mid August. STF offers four - 2 weeks sessions of Monday through Friday instruction. Classes are offered in a morning and afternoon sessions to ensure ample time to develop sailing skills.  On the water instructors will provide a safe setting, as well as tips and suggestions.

Where are sailing classes held?
For the 2023 season all Sail Training Foundation classes will be held at the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club on the west side. The facility is ideally located to offer convenient access to waters of Door County. Classes are held rain or shine as scheduled.

What can I expect to learn?
Our US Sailing certified instructors use a combination of classroom, on land and extensive on the water training to develop your boat handling and sailing skills. During a 2-week session you will be introduced to all the basic skills necessary to operate a small boat on the waters of Green Bay. This will include:

Terminology

Basic knots

Setting up (rigging) and storage of boats

Steering using a rudder & tiller

Points of sails and basic sail trim

Capsize recovery

Departing and returning to the dock

Upon demonstrating understanding and mastery of the basic skills, you will then move on to advanced instruction in other sessions. In these classes, you will expand your knowledge including rules of road, advanced boat handling and racing techniques, for those who are interested.

While the Sail Training Foundation focuses on training and developing the student's knowledge; our primary focus is always water safety. Door County is surrounded by water with more than 250 miles of shoreline. There are countless opportunities to enjoy the many water based activities in Door County. Sailing is an excellent way to develop confidence and self reliance. Knowing how to handle yourself and a water craft in a safe manner can both relieve stress and increase your enjoyment.
